Mary Beale School of Needlework

Lesson 11

(The needlework chart for this lesson corresponds with Lesson 16 of the School)

Deep Pockets

What you realize when you see these 18TH and 19TH century “pockets” that women wore under their skirts is the fact that nothing really changes! The mode of carrying things changes, but that’s about it. I think you will discover from this lesson what women had in these pockets is very similar in nature to what women would carry in a large purse. It is my contention that the more space you have to put things in, the more things you will find to put in your purse. Their pockets were no different! This is a fun way to look at certain fashion items from over 300 years ago.

Another thing I find fascinating, is the fact that these early pockets were embroidered with intricate designs. Remember nobody saw these pockets. Later on they just became more patch work items with remnant pieces of cloth. Hope you will enjoy this lesson.
