Mary Beale School of Needlework

Lesson 8

 Big Hair

When I think of a big hair, I think of the 60’s when the “beehive” hairdo was popular. Some of those hairdos were tamer than others, but they all pale in comparison to the big hair of the 1780’s! The Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, took big hair to a whole new level. I could maybe see some of these hairstyles at a costume party, but these were all the rage at every party! Please take a look at the lesson to see more of what I’m talking about. It almost seems like fiction! For the activity sheet for the kids, I created a man and a woman from the 1780’s with all the finery including the hair! Men wore wigs too. I thought they could cut out pictures of their faces and paste them inside the blank space I left for a face. (It’s like the cardboard cutouts you see at the fair!) They can color the clothing any way they like! It will be fun to see what they would look like if they lived in 1780!
